Buyer guide
Buying cycads in South Africa
A cycad is a long-term purchase, and often an expensive one. Work through these six checks before you transfer money, whether you are buying your first plant or adding to a collection.
Is the plant legally held, with permits?
South African cycads are protected. Ask the seller which species it is and what permits cover it, and confirm with your provincial conservation authority what you need to possess and transport it. Never buy a plant that may have been taken from the wild.
Do you trust the name on the label?
Species and form drive price more than anything else. Ask for the photographs that show it: whole plant, stem, crown from above, a full leaf, leaflet top and underside, and any cone. Where the name matters to the price, ask whether an independent expert has assessed it.
What size and condition is it really?
Ask for stem height and diameter, number of heads, and whether the plant is established or recently moved. Look for a firm stem with no soft or hollow spots, a clean crown, and new growth that is not stunted or distorted.
Is it healthy?
Check for scale, woolly aphid, weevil damage and rot at the base. Ask when it was last repotted or lifted, and whether it has ever been treated for anything.
Is the price fair?
Compare it to what similar plants of the same species and stem size are actually selling for, not to the highest price you have seen asked. A plant with documented identification and paperwork is worth more than the same plant without.
How will you pay and collect?
On Cycad Central payments go by manual bank transfer and are confirmed before the plant is handed over, with an invoice for both sides. Agree in writing who lifts, who transports, who carries the risk, and what happens if the plant is not as described.
Your responsibility as a buyer
Cycad Central connects buyers, sellers and independent experts and keeps the record. It does not replace permits, legislation, conservation authorities or professional botanical determination. Buyers remain responsible for complying with all applicable South African laws and permit requirements when buying, transporting or possessing cycads.
