Encephalartos arenarius grows in the coastal dune sands around Alexandria in the Eastern Cape, and it is one of the few Encephalartos where the trade genuinely distinguishes two colour forms: the common green and the sought-after true blue.

Both forms share the species' heavy, twisted, broadly lobed leaflets — closer in texture to latifrons than to the narrow-leaved blues. The leaves curl and contort rather than lying flat, and the plant carries a short, thick stem that tends to recline as it ages.
The blue form commands a substantial premium, and because seedlings can take years to declare their colour, this is a species where buying a mature plant with a hardened flush removes real risk. Photographs of a fresh flush flatter every arenarius; ask for pictures of hardened leaves.
Arenarius grows faster than most of its neighbours, and its dune origin means it tolerates sandy, poor soils that would starve other species. That makes it an unusually practical garden plant in coastal regions.
How to identify it
- Broad, deeply lobed leaflets, strongly twisted along the leaf axis.
- Leaves curl and recurve so the crown looks tousled rather than tidy.
- Colour ranges from mid-green to a genuine silver-blue in the blue form.
- Short, thick stem that leans or reclines with age, often suckering at the base.
- Adapted to sand — habitat plants sit in near-pure dune substrate.

- Form: documented true blue material is worth a multiple of the green form.
- Caudex thickness and the number of established heads.
- Leaf twist and lobing quality — the plant's visual signature.
- Verified identification, since arenarius hybridises with latifrons and horridus.

Green-form plants are among the more affordable large-leaved Encephalartos, while confirmed blue-form specimens can cost several times more at the same size. Colour claims should be supported by hardened-flush photographs and, ideally, expert assessment.
