Encephalartos cerinus was only described in 1990 and is known from a single small population on steep KwaZulu-Natal slopes. Its name comes from the heavy waxy bloom that coats the cones and gives the whole plant a dusty blue-grey cast.
About Encephalartos cerinus
It is a small species with a mostly subterranean stem and stiff, blue-grey leaves that stand upright rather than arching. In a collection it reads as a compact, tidy plant rather than a landscape specimen, which is part of its appeal to container growers.
The wild population is measured in dozens of plants, so anything legitimately in trade is nursery-raised from documented parent stock. Provenance paperwork is not optional here, and buyers should expect the seller to produce it without being pushed.
How to identify it
- Stiff, upright blue-grey leaves with a distinct waxy bloom.
- Leaflets narrow, entire or with a spine or two, held at an angle forming a shallow V.
- Stem short and largely below ground.
- Cones heavily coated in blue-grey wax — the diagnostic feature.
