Cycads for sale in the Free State
The Free State's cold, dry winters rule out the tender coastal species but suit the frost-hardy grassland cycads. Full sun, gritty soil and a dry winter are exactly what those plants come from.
Every plant below is listed by a South African seller with permits attached to the listing, priced in Rand. Payment runs through Cycad Central, and the seller is only paid once you have the plant.

No sellers in the Free State have plants on the market at the moment. Cycads travel well, so it is worth looking at the whole market — most sellers arrange courier or road transport.
Buying a cycad in the Free State
- Check the permit first. All South African cycads are protected; a private seller needs a possession permit and a nursery a selling permit. Both are attached to the listing.
- Know the going rate. Plants are priced by caudex width — compare against the current rate per centimetre.
- Ask for the species to be confirmed. An independent expert identification is recorded permanently against the plant.
- Arrange collection or transport with the seller. Large plants travel best bare-rooted and shaded.
