Encephalartos cycadifolius lives on the high Sneeuberg near Graaff-Reinet, in grassland that freezes hard and burns regularly. It is one of the most cold-tolerant cycads in the world, and it looks the part: a dense crown of narrow, wiry, grey-green leaves on a short, fire-hardened stem.

It belongs to the small group of highveld and mountain grassland cycads with rolled, needle-like leaflets — a form that sheds cold and fire rather than chasing light. Growth is very slow, and a plant with any real stem has been alive a long time.
