Waterberg cycad
Encephalartos eugene-maraisii — the Waterberg cycad
Encephalartos eugene-maraisii is the type species of the Limpopo blue group and the plant most other blue Limpopo cycads get compared against. Named after the poet and naturalist Eugène Marais, it grows on rocky Waterberg slopes and carries stiff, blue-grey leaves on a solid upright stem.
About Encephalartos eugene-maraisii
Its relatives — dolomiticus, dyerianus, middelburgensis, cupidus and the extinct-in-the-wild nubimontanus and brevifoliolatus — were all separated out of this species over time. That taxonomic history is exactly why so many plants circulate under the wrong label, and why verified identity carries real resale value in this group.
In the garden it is a solid, architectural blue that is easier to place than the giant greens and hardier than the coastal species. It is slow, but it is dependable and it holds colour well in full sun.
How to identify it
- Blue-grey to grey-green stiff leaves, straight or slightly curved.
- Narrow leaflets, usually entire or with one or two spines, angled forward along the rachis.
- Upright stem to about 3 m, sometimes suckering at the base.
- Leaflets reduce to prickles toward the leaf base.
What drives the price
- Verified identity within a group where mislabelling is routine.
- Stem height and girth.
- Blue intensity held through a full hardened flush.
- Permit completeness and a clean ownership record.
More available than its rarer relatives, so mid-size plants are reachable for a serious hobbyist while trunked specimens climb sharply. Verification usually pays for itself here.
Permits and paperwork
Endangered and protected. Private sellers need a possession permit, nurseries a selling permit; both are attached to the listing and released to the buyer securely.

Full sun, gritty sharply drained soil, summer water and a dry winter. Tolerates dry frost. Give it room — the crown spreads wider than the trunk suggests.
