Encephalartos inopinus — the Lydenburg cycad
Encephalartos inopinus is instantly recognisable once you have seen it: the leaflets are sickle-shaped, curving forward and downward along a twisted rachis, giving the whole leaf a fluid, almost windblown look. It grows on steep quartzite slopes near Lydenburg in Mpumalanga.
About Encephalartos inopinus
The name means 'unexpected', which suited a species found late and in a small area. Wild numbers have collapsed through collecting and habitat pressure, and it is now critically endangered with very few reproducing plants left.
In cultivation it is prized for that distinctive leaf shape, and it propagates well enough from seed that legal plants are obtainable. As always the documents are the difference between an asset and a problem.
How to identify it
- Sickle-shaped, falcate leaflets curving forward and downward.
- Twisted leaf rachis giving a spiralled appearance.
- Blue-green to grey-green colour, occasionally quite blue.
- Slender stem, sometimes leaning, to about 2–3 m.
