Encephalartos longifolius is the big, variable Eastern Cape species that ranges from deep green to genuinely blue depending on where the plant originates. It carries long, straight leaves on a solid trunk and produces some of the largest cones in the genus.
About Encephalartos longifolius
The species occupies a wide arc of the Eastern Cape from the Baviaanskloof to the Kouga and beyond, and populations differ enough in colour and leaflet width that experienced collectors talk about localities rather than the species as a whole. Blue forms from certain populations carry a clear premium.
It is a durable garden plant: tolerant of wind, coastal conditions, drought and moderate frost. Older specimens with a thick trunk and a full crown of two-metre leaves are among the most imposing cycads available legally in South Africa.

- Long, straight leaves, often 1.5–2 m, held stiffly.
- Leaflets broad, leathery, usually entire on mature leaves.
- Colour ranges from dark green to strong blue-grey by locality.
- Very large cones — females produce heavy, rounded cones.
