Encephalartos senticosus — the Jozini cycad
Encephalartos senticosus grows along the northern Lebombo range around Jozini and into Eswatini and Mozambique. It is a robust green species with strongly toothed, slightly twisted leaflets and a solid trunk, and it is one of the more widely cultivated protected cycads in South Africa.
About Encephalartos senticosus
It was split from E. lebomboensis and the two remain hard to separate without locality information. Senticosus generally shows broader, more spiny leaflets and a heavier build, and it colours a slightly deeper green.
It is fast for a cycad, tolerant of heat and drought, and it suckers into multi-headed clumps. That combination makes it a favourite for warm-climate landscaping as well as collections.
